A rectocele occurs when the rectum pushes the back wall of the vagina forward, causing a prominent bulge into the vagina. Risk factors include difficult childbirth and the use of forceps during delivery, but women who have never had children can also develop a rectocele.
Common symptoms include problems with bowel movement, constipation, the feeling that the bowel isn’t completely empty after using the toilet, pain and faecal incontinence. Our specialists may diagnose women with this condition by conducting tests to measure pelvic floor muscles, such as anorectal physiology tests.
Surgical intervention may be necessary to repair and strengthen the wall between the vagina and rectum. Our specialist practitioners are here to support you with any questions you may have regarding the condition.
